WHAT IS “OFF”?
“Off” in English means “disconnected” or “out”.
In Portuguese, when I use the word “off”, it can mean a day without work, that I am on holiday, that I will not be answering emails. If I say something “off”, it is probably confidential information. When I hear “off”, I also think of a universe of invisible things and situations, of what is off-screen, hidden, unofficial, what cannot or does not want to be placed in the centre of attention. I think of a subtle strangeness, of what is out of place, I think of the spectral, the ghostly.
‘Um pouco off’ begins with a voice-over. It is from this voice that the piece is constructed. In the relationship between this voice and the audience, the performer and the space.
‘Um pouco off’ is a performance project for a voice-over and a performer that is constructed from the universe of the word off.
